It owes its extraordinary beauty to its palaces which were reconstructed after the devastating earthquake of 1693 which laid waste to the entire area of South-east Sicily. Every year in May the city celebrates with the Infiorata, a flower festival during which entire streets are transformed into carpets of brightly-coloured flower petals which are true works of art.
